Dolphins Wrap Up Successful Day At Knecht Cup Regatta

CHERRY HILL, NJ. - The Jacksonville women's rowing team completed a successful day at the Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River, in New Jersey.

After the entire weekend of racing was crammed into Sunday due to poor weather conditions on Saturday, JU had all three boats that could compete in the grand final, in said final.

"The weekend as a whole tested our patience," said head coach Mike Lane. "We had to remember that mother nature is always in charge. Saturday getting canceled forced Sunday to be a winner takes all situation. I'm really proud of how our rowers responded. They dealt well with the adversity, and every boat that could advance to the grand finals did, which is huge for our overall team!"

To qualify, Jacksonville's 1v8, 2v8 and 1v4 had to win their respective heats, or have the next fastest time, and all three boats did just that. Racing against boats like Georgetown, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh all afternoon, the Dolphins 1v4 and 2v4 both set the tone with two second place finishes. Jacksonville's 1v4 finished with a 7:44.85 time in the final, less than six seconds behind first place Massachusetts. The 2v4 was placed directly into the grand final, due to sheer lack of time, and placed second in its heat against Boston University. However, that second place time was the second fastest time between the 12 teams in the two heats, so JU claimed its second silver medal of the day.

JU's 1v8 raced against boats from Boston, Georgetown and Radcliffe in the grand final and, in a tightly contested race, finished in fourth place with a 6:57.07 time. The Dolphins 2v8 finished in sixth in another tightly contested finish.

To round out the Dolphins day of racing, the 2x finished in third in their respective heat.

"I am especially proud of our fours, who both medaled today, as well as our eights that faced very difficult racing in the afternoon racing," further added Lane. "All in all, we learned a bunch, and helped to prepare us to be back on the Cooper River in five weeks for our MAAC Championships!"
