The Jacksonville men's rowing team finished its first weekend of spring racing on Saturday in DeLand.
The weather was perfect, and the water was glass-like as the day got underway at 10 am. A light cross head wind appeared around 11 am and winds increased to as much as 14 mph throughout the remainder of the day.
Jacksonville's 1v8 and 2v8 in the morning group claimed first over Wesleyan and Rollins, respectively. JU's Varsity Eight in the PM group finished just two seconds behind first place Stetson, and the Dolphins 2v8 finished in second ahead of Embry-Riddle and Rollins. JU's 3v8 finished in third behind a pair of boats from Wesleyan.
The 1v8 in the AM race won by four seconds over Wesleyan and the 2v8 won by nearly a minute against Rollins. The 1v8 in the afternoon finished in second by less than two seconds to Stetson, and the 2v8 claimed second place as well, well ahead of boats from Embry-Riddle and Rollins.
"It feels great to finally be back to racing," said head coach Preston Weinard. "We had a super productive spring break, with lots of time on the water and a lot of hard work done to prepare for our first race this weekend. Overall, today was a good day for the JU men. Varsity 8+ is starting to feel out an aggressive race plan, 2nd Varsity 8+ putting out undeniable effort from start to finish, and the 3rd Varsity 8+ putting a race together- most of them in that boat racing their first race ever! I am proud to watch the team race today, very proud of the work they have all done so far, and how they performed today. Major kudos to Stetson, Wesleyan, Embry-Riddle and Rollins: JU enjoyed racing all y'all all day today, and each team put up great performances.
I am looking forward to building upon this weekend. It is just the start of the 2024 campaign, and there is more speed to gain!"
Jacksonville returns to the water next weekend in Fellesmere, Florida, for a day of racing with Florida Tech on March 23.
