MERCER, NJ. – The Jacksonville men's rowing team wrapped up its first day at the IRA National Championships and looks forward to the semi-finals tomorrow on the water of Mercer Lake.
"Both crews had a solid start in the Heats on day one of the IRA Championship," said head coach Preston Weinard. "The heats are a formality for us; a chance to have a race under our belt and a starting point for the rest of the weekend. Both crews will line up in tough semifinals Saturday morning. The goal is to close the gap on crews in the other heats and execute some aggressive JU racing. Each race is a chance to show the country what JU is made of, and we'll be seizing those chances!"
Both Jacksonville's First and Second Varsity Eight faired similarly in the time-trial portion of Friday's competition. The 1v raced against the likes of Washington, Syracuse, Dartmouth and others, and finished in sixth with a 6:10.951 time. The 2v rowed against boats from Princeton, Yale and Pennsylvania, as well as others, and finished in sixth with a 6:22.373 time.
Looking forward to tomorrow, the Dolphins Varsity Eight will race at 9:50 in the morning against Santa Clara, Oregon State, Columbia, Drexel and La Salle. JU's 2v will start just 20 minutes later against La Salle, Georgetown, Stanford, Oregon State and Santa Clara. Results tomorrow will determine where JU is placed for the finals on Sunday.
