The Jacksonville men's rowing team finished its second weekend of spring racing on Saturday in Fellesmere.
With satisfactory weather, the race began with the morning sun with a high of 85 degrees and winds steady at 11 miles per hour. As the day wore on, a steady wind from the West created a tailwind and gusts reached as high as 15 mph.
"Overall I'm pretty proud with how the team did," said head coach Preston Weinard. "I'm most proud with how the team is learning how to be a team and how to come together on and off the water. It's probably more imporant than the racing part is getting people to come together as one. I'm proud of the Varsity Eight for putting down a good race and kind of dominating. Also proud of the fight the 2v8 put up as well as the 2v4 and 3v4."
The Dolphins 1V8 took a strong lead and finished their race against Embrey Riddle and Florida Tech with 05:47.4 on the clock, more than seven seconds haead of second placed ERAU. In the 2v8 race, JU's second Varsity 8 finished just behind ERAU with two seconds separating the two boats. The Dolphins also had their 3v8 compete in the 2V race, in which it finished in third with a time of 6:37.2. JU's Varsity Four clocked a 06:23.2, less than two seconds off first place FIT. In the Second Varsity Four, JU won its second race of the day by just under six seconds, and finished with a time of 06:41.
"The message this week is more of a gritty, in the pain cave type of message," further added Weinard. "We need to be a little tougher in the middle of the race and willing to sacrifice and push in that part. We've been good at the start and the sprint at the end, but we leave too much in the middle. We'll hit the ergs a little bit this week and try to get more fitness and horsepower, it'll be a hard week but worth it for FIRA's."
Jacksonville returns to the water next week in Sarasota for the FIRA Championships. Day one of the two day race is set for Friday, March 29.
