FAIRFAX, Va.- The Jacksonville men's rowing team is returning home after wrapping up its day of racing at the Occoquan Collegiate Invitational.
The weather held out for the most part throughout the day, with the biggest obstacle being a crosswind between 12-15 mph. The water was flat though, and produced solid, fair racing.
"It's definitely cool to walk away from this race having beaten a ranked opponent in Gonzaga (#25),' said head coach Preston Weinard. "The Varsity Eight really put together some good races, and shined in that final."
Jacksonville's 1v8 took home first place in the B final with a 5:53.65 time, which would've been competing for a medal in the A final. To start the day, both the 1v and 2v finished behind Navy, which put them in the B finals later that day. The 3v, going against some fast boats as well, finished in third behind Navy and Holy Cross.
The 2v8 finished in fourth in the 2v B final, with a 6:17.09 time, which was just .5 seconds faster than Marietta and less than 1.5 seconds behind third-placed Hobart. JU's 3v finished in second behind Hobart in its B final.
"The 2v8 and 3v8 have sort of been going through the ringer the last few weeks," further added Weinard. "Each boat had a new lineup with guys returning from illness or injury but, this gave us the most competitive lineup that we could offer. The last 500 meters from the 2v had them kick it into another gear to beat Marietta, which was really exciting. The 3v battled adversity throughout the day and I'm proud that they still showed up and competed having faced that."
