CHERRY HILL, N.J.- The Jacksonville women's rowing team sent two boats to the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta over the weekend, and both are heading back to Jacksonville with medals from their respective races.
"These athletes showed an immense amount of resiliency this weekend, let alone this whole season," said coach Alex Pullium after the final race. "I am incredibly proud of their effort and grateful for their commitment to our common goals - working hard to create everlasting memories together. Their passion showed in their finishes today, and it makes me feel hopeful for their futures as JU oarswomen. Phins Up!"
The Dolphins Freshman/Novice 4+ placed third in the time-trial, ahead of boats from Georgetown, Gordon and Lafayette. The young rowers then took second in their semi-final, less than three seconds behind Rhode Island, which was enough to send them to the grand final. Jacksonville then took second overall in the grand final. The Dolphins finished ahead of Rhode Island this time, by more than 16 seconds. JU's 8:15.653 time was just eight seconds behind George Mason, who was the lone boat to finish about the Dolphins.
Jacksonville's second boat, the 2x, also took home a medal. In its time trial, the Dolphins took seventh out of 10, ahead of boats from Gordon and Long Island. In the semi-final, JU's 2x shaved off nearly a minute on their time, which was good enough for fourth in the second semi-final. In the petite final, Jacksonville again increased its speed, finishing with a 8:58.620 time, its best of the day, which was good for second place.
The Dolphins compete next at the MAAC Championships on May 19. A preview will come out in the coming days that will have lineups, race information as well as a stream link as JU looks to win its third consecutive conference championship.
