BETHEL, Ohio. - The Jacksonville women's rowing team completed the semi-finals portion of the NCAA Championships on Saturday morning.
With glass-like water and partly cloudy skies, the weather for the second day of competition made for honest competition. Rain forecast in the afternoon sped each start-time up by four minutes as the NCAA is attempting to wrap up ahead of the storms that are predicted to move in later today.
"Proud of our effort today," said head coach Mike Lane. "Although our results were not what we wanted, we are in a great spot as we head into the grand finals tomorrow. We truly are the little engine and want to get all our boats past someone today. I know we can!"
The Dolphins Varsity Eight started things off with an 8:12 start time, racing against boats from Indiana, Duke, Northeastern and Rhode Island. All five opponents sped ahead on the open water, and a late push from JU wasn't enough to escape fifth place. Jacksonville finished with a 6:48.248 time.
JU's Second Varsity Eight rowed 32 minutes later in a field with Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston and SMU. Similarily to the 1v8, the other boats finished ahead, respectively, and JU's 7:07.766 time was good for fifth.
To round out the morning, Jacksonville's Varsity Four raced against Ohio State, Indiana, Boston and SMU at 9:24. The Dolphins were competing for third through much of the race, and were in fourth for a large portion towards the end. A late surge from SMU though was enough to see the Mustangs pass the finish line before JU, and their 7:53.714 time saw them finish in fifth as well.
All three boats for the Dolphins will compete in their respective '4' final tomorrow morning. Both JU's 1v4 and 2v8 will compete against boats from SMU, Rhode Island and Northeastern. The Dolphins Varsity Eight will race against Boston, Rhode Island and SMU.
